During our thrilling cross-country drive through France, Marseille marked our southernmost destination. We had just basked in the beauty of Avignon, and the allure of the Mediterranean coast was calling. Our first morning in Marseille, we ascended to the breathtaking Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde. The views were nothing short of spectacular, offering a sweeping panorama of the city and the sea.
Eager for more adventure, we took a day trip to Cassis, a quintessential French seaside town that seemed like it was plucked straight from a postcard. Navigating the narrow streets proved tricky, and finding a parking spot was a challenge. In a moment of confusion, I drove into a government lot, only to be trapped by metal barriers. I had to track down a policeman to release us. Finally, we found the correct lot, but it was nearly full. Kara bravely fought off several French families to secure a spot until I could park the car.
The next day, we decided to explore Marseille by car. The sight of trucks filled with fully armed police was both comforting and disconcerting, much like our experiences in Mexico. At one point, I accidentally drove the wrong way down a one-way street, right in front of a truckload of officers. My heart pounded as I feared ending up in a French jail. Marseille had an edgy vibe that kept us on high alert. The city's gritty atmosphere made us uneasy, and after a series of tense encounters, we decided to cut our stay short.
With a mix of relief and excitement, we hit the road again, heading for the more tranquil and welcoming city of Bordeaux. Our adventures in Marseille were a whirlwind of breathtaking sights and heart-pounding moments, a chapter in our journey that we would remember forever for its unique blend of beauty and danger.
